4 Reasons Why Your Brain Needs Water

Posted on May 16, 2019 4 Reasons Why Your Brain Needs Water

Is there a correlation between water and the brain function?

Yes, there is!

Water is an indispensable part when it comes to an individual’s health and overall well-being. When you don’t drink enough water it leads to severe consequences. This, in turn, has a negative impact on your vital bodily functions.

One such bodily function that is affected by dehydration is brain activity. Dehydration affects the brain causing memory impairment. It hampers your cognitive and motor skills. Plus, it affects your mood. Thus, drinking plentiful water every day is important and here is how being hydrated can help improve your mental health.

1. The Human Brain is 80% Water

If you have ever considered how much of your brain is water, then the answer to it is 80%. That’s right!

It is estimated that about three-quarters of our brain is water. As such, even slight dehydration can cause fatigue, headaches, lack of mental clarity, stress and sleep issues. So, with 80% of our brain being made with water, it is only obvious that we need to keep ourselves hydrated.

2. Water Helps Improve Brain’s Efficiency

Brain cells require a delicate balance between water and various elements to operate optimally or else it could reduce the brain’s cells efficiency. When the brain is not performing at its best, due to dehydration, you could lose the ability to concentrate for a longer period. It could also lead to mood swings and affect your memory. Thus, to improve the efficiency of your brain, drinking water is essential.

3. It Helps Improve Memory Function

Dehydration can impair short term memory function and the recall of long term memory. It has been noted that even a decrease of 2% of water can cause memory impairment. The reason for this is because water works as a nutrient for your brain, and when there is a deficit it could interfere with the functioning of your memory. As such, to steer clear from this and to boosts your memory function it is important to drink enough water.

4. It Improves Your Attention Span

One of the effects of dehydration on the brain is a shorter attention span. Dehydration makes you lose your focus and affects your concentration. This affects your performance at work. Thus, to increase attention span and to sharpen your focus, staying hydrated throughout the day is important.

This theory has also been supported by the study carried out by the University of East London, wherein they noted a higher improvement in attention span among school pupils who drank more water.

Why Drinking Pure Water Is Important?

Knowing how important water is for the proper functioning of our brain, we should also realize that the purity of the water is essential as well. Just plain and clear water is not necessarily safe to drink as it can contain a lot of impurities and other contaminants. Thus, here, one has to ensure that the drinking water is clean as well as pure. And, this could only be achieved by using a good quality home water purifier.

Depending on the TDS level, you can either opt for an RO water purifier or UV water purifier. This will ensure that your water is free from all harmful contaminants, impurities and micro-organisms. It will also help to substantially improve the taste of the water. More importantly, drinking pure water helps to significantly reduce health risks.
